Component Categories Remover is a standalone application which runs without installation. It removes the Windows Registry entries which are relevant for the registration of Component Categories. This tool is needed by FDT test sites when performing official certification tests.

Why do you need the tool?

Imagine you have 2 DTMs: a communication DTM (which is already certified) and a device DTM which shall be certified. The device DTM has a bug which is related to the FDT Component Categories. The communication DTM does not have the bug.

The communication DTM is installed first. The Windows Registry now contains valid FDT Component Categories.

Now, the device DTM is installed. Depending on the implementation of the Setup, the device DTM recognizes that Component Categories already exist and does nothing about them. In this case, the bug of the device DTM is hidden and cannot be found by dtmINSPECTOR.

How to use the tool?

To reveal the hidden bug, the tool is executed before the installation of the DTM to be tested. It removes all FDT Component Categories and thereby forces to Setup of the device DTM to create them. The invalid entries will then be detected by dtmINSPECTOR as a bug.
